girlatastartup IS MOVING!!! And Happy Thanksgiving!

Well, I never thought I’d say this, but I’m moving!!! Blogs, that is.
I bought a domain, and Sir Percival was nice enough to help me set up my new website….
www.girlatastartup.com

When I first started this blog, I had no idea how to link, embed, and the list goes on….
Now, I basically live online. Youtube, Hulu, Pandora, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, NYTimes.com, and MSNBC.com are my obsessions.

I’ve also created a more creative blog on tumblr, so I can post random quotes, stories, videos and pics, and not feel guilty that I don’t only talk about documents.
www.streetblue.tumblr.com

I’m still in the office, but have a Great Thanksgiving!!! I’ll be rocking out the local “Koo Koo Roo” or “Boston Market” with my father and brother. HOLLA.

Universal Studios With My Adopted Little Bro, Andy Steve

This past weekend, I spent some time taking my adopted little brother, Andy Steve, to Universal Studios. (Well, not really, but he looks up to me and is 11, so thus, the conclusion)
He’s a really good kid, not bratty at all, and I actually had a ton of fun. With the news of the Economy and just everything, seemingly to be incredibly negative, sometimes you can get a lot out of hanging out with the young folk. You can be a kid again.

Oh, and I don’t usually take pics at theme parks for fear of looking like a tourist, but I did it for the blog. :)

Here were the highlights.

Me, hanging out with Apu at the Kwik-E-Mart

They had “Pocky,” a popular Korean snack inside.

And of course, a little Java action

And Moe’s

Andy Steve and I attempted to go inside the “House of Horrors.” Sadly, it wasn’t him who chickened out. It was me. (After some scary man in a mask ran after me)

At this point, I wanted to take Andy Steve on the Studio tour, but he seemed bored. I promised him that it would be really fun…
It’s basically this elongated golf cart, that you’re riding with a very Positive driver/host who gives you a play-by-play about the history of Universal Studios.

The magic of movies truly are the special effects. Here is a picture of a river that “Rushes” on command as well as the rain which started/stopped with the click of a button.

And the famous Bates Motel from “Psycho.” Note: This guy is an actor. He definitely freaked me out though after he ran after our elongated cart.

New Appointments, Mark Cuban, and Welcome to Serena Ehrlich!

The Obama Administration is inching closer to the White House, and he’s already made several appointments, including Eric Holder, a longtime Washington lawyer as Attorney-General, and Hillary Clinton has been offered the role of Secretary of State. Will she accept or not?

And you may have heard about the SEC charging Mark Cuban of Insider Trading. If you need to take a look at the document, here it is:
SEC vs. Mark Cuban

And welcome to Serena Ehrlich, our new Director of Marketing, formerly of Businesswire. I’m definitely no longer “Girlatastartup.” Definitely need to get a new name for the blog, ya know?

Jury Duty Postponement and BOA, Korean Pop Tart, Wants to “Eat You Up”

I reported for jury service yesterday to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Court, and had a flashback to 9th grade Health Class. There were the following:
vending-machine

1) Many bored-looking people of various ethnicities
2) A vending machine that didn’t work. (I was very annoyed as the machine ate my dollar. Don’t you hate when that happens?)
3) A Teacher…er… An Administrator who gives an introduction to “Being A Juror.”
And…last but not least
4) THE VIDEO. Yes, a video about the “Benefits of being a Juror,” complete with cheesy music, oddly cut scenes, and the jurors who raved about how “Being a juror was one of the best experiences of my life.”

For a moment, I actually wanted to be a juror. Sike. Just kidding. I postponed my duties until February because there were about 3 Asian-Americans in the room, and I would’ve definitely gotten chosen for trial. ‘Cause you know… they probably want to keep it diverse.

And check out this video from South Korean Pop Sensation, BOA, who is making her US Debut with her dance single, “Eat You Up.” Apparently, she’s also working with the producer Darkchild, as well as FloRida. It’s a pretty cool video.

So You Work a 9 to 5: Interview with Mark de Barros of CommunityInAction.org

Brazil. When people in the U.S. think of Brazil… if you’re a dude, you think of Gisele, the supermodel. And if you’re a female, you’re probably thinking of beaches, sun, lots of time to sunbathe and hang out in Rio de Janiero or São Paulo. Okay, I’m generalizing, but I was lucky enough to go to Rio de Janiero, Bahia, and São Paulo during a Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars trip during my undergrad years. Gorgeous…gorgeous country.

FAST FORWARD SEVERAL YEARS…

I ended up meeting Mark de Barros at a party and found out that he is the Assistant Director of a Non-profit called Community in Action, a non-Governmental Organization, that is located in one of the largest favelas (slums) of Rio de Janeiro. Their mission is to offer vocational and cultural classes for students of all ages by offering employment opportunities for actual residents to enact a long-term change for the entire community.
Once we started talking about his work with this NGO, I definitely needed to get him on the blog.

Mark, tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from? Where did you grow up?

I am both a Brazilian and an American citizen, and have been raised in both cultures. I grew up mainly in four places: Washington, DC area, Brussels, Belgium, Phoenix, Arizona (where I spent most of my time) and of course, Brazil.

I love São Paulo way more than Rio. :) Tell us about Brazil and growing up there.
Well, actually, I’ve probably only spent a good three years of my life in Brazil. My family is from Vitória, Brazil, which is just north of Rio. But I have spent my most recent “Brazil” days in Rio and love it. Brazilian culture is something that you can’t truly understand if you haven’t visited the country. It has a wonderful ability to make people feel at home. But, Rio is better than São Paulo. You really can’t beat the beaches of Ipanema and the weather year-round. There is just so much to do in and around Rio.

I need to visit Brazil again. On a different note, considering the recent downturn in the U.S. Economy, it’s interesting to see that the Brazilian economy is actually doing quite well. Yet, there
is an income disparity as shown in movies like “City of God.” Can you elaborate?

You’re absolutely right. Just recently, two massive oil reserves were discovered in the southern part of the state of Rio that should make Brazil a prospective OPEC member and increase overall foreign investment. But, unfortunately, there is social disparity unlike any other country in the world. Brazil is a country that is so rich in natural resources yet does not show for it socially, well at least as much as it should. In Rio, sometimes only 100 meters separate high-rises with million dollar condominiums and slums, where families live in one-room shacks with dirt floors. Why does this happen? There are various factors. One of them is obviously, corruption. I have witnessed elected community representatives for these slums exploit resources and compromise community programs to benefit themselves and/or their respective groups. Not to say everyone is like this, but there is a lot of rhetorical discourse and no fulfillment of promises. But another reason is that it is simply a part of its history. It has been like this for a while and nothing has really come about to change the situation. One would think that people who have been through what poor Brazilians have gone through their whole lives would start coalitions and attempt some massive social movement. It’s a system that is slowly changing for the better but that also has maintained many of its legacies and therefore an extended period of status quo.

What made you get involved in Community in Action? What do you do for this non-profit?
I became involved with Community in Action while I was working in Rio as an intern during May of 2007. I met the founder, Zak Paster, and became acquainted with the volunteers at the NGO. I was immediately captivated by the people of the community and the sense of solidarity they had, especially given its prevalent violence. So after I graduated I went back down. I actually just finished helping coordinate a DC fundraiser we had on September 17th. Before that I was working on site in Rio developing different programs for the organization, teaching, and helping coordinate different activities/projects for incoming volunteers. I will be going overseas for several months and won’t be as active as I would like to, but I still plan on working on fundraising projects. I hope to be able return to Rio to work as Director of the organization, considering how much I have learned from the directors I have worked with and the great experience that comes with running a non-profit.

That’s a pretty noble aspiration. You’re basically fresh out of school, and making your next moves, right? What’s your dream job and why?
I sure am. However, I keep on telling people I just graduated. I guess it’s true, but each time I say it seems like I’ve been out of school for longer and longer. So, I’m not sure how much longer I can bask in the time period of being a “recent college graduate”. I have several dream jobs. One would be to work as a lawyer for a human rights organization, such as the UN or Justiça Global (based in Rio) representing marginalized groups and individuals in regional and international courts. My second dream job would be to establish an NGO that works like Community in Action (tackling community problems by incorporating residents of the actual community) but on a more international level.

There is a definite need for that on an International level. So, what are the biggest issues facing non-profits like Community in Action? Funding? Getting the word out? Press?

FUNDING. It’s all about how much funding is available. A non-profit’s goals cannot be set without a clear expectation of how much money will be coming in. It’s a sad fact that a lot of other non-profits spend time on fundraising rather than actually focusing time and energy to their purpose of existing. Not to take away from other aspects. So, without a constant influx of money, long-term sustainability is not all that viable. Media, solid community relations and a good reputation are all vital. The relationship with the community is particularly important to us. We work in the Complexo do Alemão, the most dangerous slum in Rio. So, making sure that we do not interfere with the drug trafficking factions is a must, although we have never been given any problems. Also, Community in Action has become a trusted place for the residents of the community. They love coming to our site and taking advantage of all our services. We have created a positive vibe in a tough community and this is what brings more and more students every month. We have gotten to the point where we have to turn away some people because our space is limited (and because of lack of funding for new classes). But it is always very inspiring to see people want to learn the skills necessary to get jobs, become more educated and improve their lives. This is what we are there to do, create opportunity.

How is technology and the Internet helping the mission statement of Community in Action?

Technology and the Internet have helped us dramatically. For example, just a couple of years ago, we didn’t have Internet and some time before that we didn’t have computers. With the arrival of new PCs for our computer lab, our classes have increased greatly by size, therefore allowing for greater skill sets on the part of our students who, in turn, use those skills to find jobs, etc. Now we have Internet on half of our computers and have people regularly come in to check their email and research different topics that interest them. This has created an avenue for the poorer population to become Internet-savvy and integrate themselves into larger networks. It also allows them to search for jobs and other opportunities. All of this would not have been affordable for someone who earns minimum wage. We have also created a very good-looking website that attracts donations and updates those interested on what is occurring in the community and what new programs are being developed. This has increased our international networks and added to our legitimacy as a social service organization.

Yes! I saw the new, updated website. It looks great. And, because I work for a docstoc, a site that is all about professional documents, which documents are useful for non-profits? Is it LLC Agreements? Legal documentation?
Anything is useful for non-profits. Documents such as templates are very useful in drafting new legal documents or modifying existing ones. Bureaucracies in the 3rd world countries are impossible, so anything to help with the drafting of official documents helps. The LLC agreements don’t particularly apply to us as we do not have partners with a stake in our organization but what I can tell is that we are looking to change our legal status in Brazil and have been using various previously used documents by other non-profits who applied for the same status. So, having documents (that were successfully used) to refer to is always a huge time-saver and makes our life that much easier.

Very cool, Mark. Muito obrigado pelo seu tempo! (That’s Portugese for “thanks for your time.” I’d love to take credit for knowing Portugese, but this translation was courtesy of igoogle.com)
igoogle translation…I love you.

And needed to ask Mr. de Barros a couple of random questions…
Is everyone in Brazil a ridiculously good soccer player?
Yes.

Any stereotypes about Brazilian people that you’d like to debunk?
It is not as dangerous as is shown on TV shows and in the movies. A lot of the different accounts that are told are instances in which oblivious tourists are unaware of their surroundings. If you’re smart and aware when you need to be, you will be just fine, and be able to enjoy all of the great things Brazil has to offer. Watch out for Brazil. We have a young population with a lot of potential. Not to mention our innate ability to “dar um jeitinho” or always find a way to get something we want.

Uh. I think I count as one of those “oblivious tourists.” LOL. Obrigado, Mark!

Thursday Style, Beauty Tips, Suze Orman’s Financial Tips, and Today’s Buzz

I thought I’d take a break from all the depressing Financial news that has been reverberating across the world and post about style, beauty tips, and ..okay, some Financial Tips from Ms. Suze Orman herself. The woman is on every single show, dispensing personal Financial advice, so I think it’s worth it to give her advice a whirl.

Oh, and a friend from NYU, started an amazing company called NY City Explorers , that is a self-described “Brooklyn-based Creative Childcare Company and Family Enrichment Center.” And they’re hosting Brooklyn’s Independent Designer Trunk Show with Special Guest, Guillermo E. Brown, on September 20, 2008. Here is more info… (I’m all about supporting Independent creative talent) :)

Also, here is a snapshot from the Sartorialist of that chic, Independent, effortless NYC style. I mean, maybe it wasn’t effortless, but it’s very NYC, just got out of the C train, need some coffee, about to go to a meeting, and I’m walking super fast even though I’m wearing stilettos.

And here are some useful tips for achieving perfect skin (well, at least attempting to) and Anti-Inflammatory Superfoods, as well as Suze Orman’s tips on “Recovering from Recession.”

Another Day…Another Dollar

I started the “So You Work a 9 to 5,” series in April of 2008, and it has since turned into one of my favorite posts. Usually I’m scouring magazines or watching News shows to see who I can get to interview. :) The first one was with Grace Chon of ShinePetPhotos, who works in Advertising but also has a successful Pet Photography business and I just found out that she’s in the running to be MYFoxLA’s Best Pet Photographer. Please vote for her if you get a chance! It’ll take you less than five minutes and also check out her site if you need great, natural pics of your pets.

In other news, Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys has started his own independent production company called Oscilloscope.

Apple introduces an even thinner version of the Ipod. Gotta love technology. Considering my current ipod broke, I’d love to get my hands on this new one.

TechCrunch 50 is underway and here are the companies that are displaying their wares.

MSNBC’s Fall TV Preview- Fall TV is back. I’m looking forward to more Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, The Office (of course), 30 Rock, Ugly Betty, and uh… random, but Greek on ABC Family.

So You Work a 9 to 5: Interview with Aron Kressner, creator of “Obama Is the Man.”

Yes, the droves of media and political bloggers are in Denver right now, preparing for the start of the Democratic National Convention. So, I’m psyched to introduce the next girlatastartup interview with Aron Kressner of Lazy Environmentalist and also Obamaistheman.com

So, Aron, tell the readers of girlatastartup a little bit about yourself.
I’m an entrepreneur by nature. Even in college business courses I always gravitated toward entrepreneurial material, which always seemed to be an aside in most of those courses OR a punchline. Since graduating, I’ve worked for a number of small businesses, some I’ve started, some I’ve grown, some are just getting underway… I’ve also been afflicted by the GREEN plague, so it seems everything I do will be entrepreneurial and green from here on out.

What made you get involved with “Lazy Environmentalist,” and work in the world of “Green?”
I used to run a successful bike shop in New York. I left that job a year ago Spring to travel around the country, much of which was by bicycle. By the time the Fall rolled around, I’d traveled over 9,000
miles, so it’s safe to say I’d seen some things and met some people. It was all positive but it was very eye-opening for a city boy to get out into the country and see things first hand. I’ve known Josh Dorfman for a while, so when I got back I reconnected with Josh and the rest is history… what drew me to work with Josh, above other environmentally-minded entrepreneurs, was that Josh was appealing to people in an attractive way, not with guilt or scare-tactics. Josh basically says, “Hey, it’s in your best interest to green your life because it will also improve the quality of your life.”

True. No wants wants to be preached to. Ah. I miss NYC. Being in NYC, you can brag about the fact that you don’t leave a huge carbon footprint. Is that right?

Bragging really ain’t my style, but OF COURSE!

Gotta love that humility. So… I originally talked to you about using the docstoc embed widget on “Lazy Environmentalist,” and you told me about “Obama is the Man.” Please elaborate. Oh, and when are you going to use the widget? (wink)
I’m up for widgeting everything, especially docstoc!!! ObamaIsTheMan.com is my pet project, it’s my darling little baby. After my trip, it was SO obvious that people in this country need CHANGE. Real CHANGE. And that’s Obama’s message. Plus, I always used to get annoyed when people said that my generation is lazy and apathetic because we never rushed out to the polls to vote for lame candidates. But now we have someone to get behind, somebody who speaks to us, understands us, and is genuinely serious about CHANGE! So, I’m trying to appeal to other young voters and help raise some $$ for Obama 08.

Very cool. So, Are you the type of person who only drinks fair trade coffee, wears organic clothing, and only shops at Whole Foods? Being “green” is much cooler now than it used to be for obvious
reasons, but a lot of people I know still think of environmentally conscious people as wearing hemp clothing and being extreme vegans. True or False?

That’s a great question. I definitely subscribe to the Lazy Environmentalist point of view. We’re using organic cotton for our ObamaIsTheMan shirts and water-based ink. Don’t be fooled, the shirts ROCK! But you’ve got me on the food thing, I try to eat organic whenever possible. It’s my most hippy trait. As per the coffee, I’m a water guy BUT I do hear there are some good organic beers on the market now – BEER!

Oohh.. Organic beer sounds interesting. A random question, but would you ever date someone who wasn’t “Green.” That would provide for lots of angry breakfast table banter.
There are many shades of green, but love is black and white… just kidding. I’m not really one for trying to change people, so there might be some wiggle room there. I doubt I could date someone who doesn’t vote for the Obama.

Like the play on words there. Tell us about the recent press for “Obama is the Man.” The Treehugger article is awesome by the way. How are you preparing for the craziness as the Election draws near?
Thank you. It was certainly rewarding to see that such a great group, like Treehugger, was digging our vibe. I’ve been fielding a lot of interviews, we’re getting a lot of traction. I just hope it’s enough
to get people out to the polls. We’re just trying to make it easy for people to get involved, to say, here’s a great way to get started and own a littlle piece of CHANGE. It’s taking the Lazy Environmentalist perspective for green and extending it to people on a political tip.
Plus the shirts are green, I know, I know, it’s a viscous cycle.

Considering you’re in the city full of i-banking power brokers, that’s a really good perspective to have. The NY Times is one of the first newssites that I visit every morning, and when you peruse the news of the day, it can be depressing. How do you stay positive and inspired?
I wake up every morning and clap my hands and say “Obama” 10 times… really though, what’s the alternative? I also try to focus on ACTION. It’s something I’m communicating a lot to people who register their emails on ObamaIsTheMan.com. If you see a problem that you want fixed, you have to take action. Nobody is going to do it for us. That’s why we offer Free Downloads at the site, so people can get involved and they don’t have to feel like they’re being asked to spend money all the time. Plus, I tried working in an investment bank for a summer – a dream come true for any young business student. I’d had a few drinks and my friend’s father, who helped get me the gig, asked me
what I thought of the internship. I answered, “I learned exactly what I don’t want to do with the rest of my life,” and gave him a hug. Different things work for different people, but ya get out there and
try some stuff and find out what works for you – and be honest.

This is how Californians see America.

Thoughts?
Check.

Come on. I was looking for a snarky answer. :) Any last words or have anything to plug?

Thank you for the interview, this was a lot of fun, and I was even able to sneak a quick shower in there, as I have to bolt like a madman to make a train. Let’s get the widgets pumping and the docs
stocing!!! (Note: This interview was conducted via IM and I was in need of a coffee so I ran out to get a cup)

haha. Let me know when you use the embed! And thanks Mr. Kressner for the interview, and good luck as I’m sure your site’s traffic will only increase as the Election draws near. Check out Aron’s site, Obamaistheman.com for all the latest Obama info and cool t-shirts.

And Princeton Review says…Top Party Schools and a View of Hollywood from a Girl’s POV

You may all have seen the Princeton Review list of Top Party schools. I was actually about to go to Penn State before deciding on NYU. Wow. I think my life would’ve turned out slightly different. This is extremely dorky, but I went to Penn State during my junior year of high school for a science competition. I remember going and being thrilled by the fact that they have an actual creamery in the middle of their campus.

Anyway, sorry about the tangent and check out a girl blogger/Media/Tech rock star, Patricia Handschiegel’s post for the Huffington Post entitled, “How Hollywood/Media Have Lost Complete Sight of It’s Female Audience and Why Women Will Follow.”

Peace out,
K

Art as an Escape, the VMA’s and It’s definitely a case of the Mondays…

Hope you guys had a kick-ass weekend. I actually ended up watching tons of DVD’s and of course, the first season of “Mad Men,” the new AMC channel sensation.
And of course… I watched “Office Space,” again. OMG, I love that movie. So much.
Best moments:
1) Michael Bolton rapping in his car
2) Samir trying to explain why his last name is easy to pronounce
3) That annoying dude in Flinger’s with all the flares!!! Ugh. My brother worked at TGI Friday’s in high school and they REALLY do make you wear a lot of flares. I always thought they were called “buttons.” Am I odd?
4) That lady saying, “Does somebody have a case of the Mondays?” Wow. I don’t know what I’d do if someone said that to me. Probably just look confused.
5) Giving the fax machine a beat-down. Nothing beats this. EVER.

Oh, and on a more inspirational note, check out this story about Nicholas Shanks, an 18 year old former homeless teen who ended up becoming the valedictorian at Martin Luther King High School in Philadelphia. He used his art to escape his reality of living in a crowded homeless shelter. He says, “When I was in the shelter, it was boring a lot of the times. I had a CD player, paper and a pencil, and that got me through most of the months.”

He will be attending the Art Institute of Philadelphia in the fall ,and wants to become a video game designer. Isn’t this kid amazing?

Oops, gotta plug the workplace. Here is the list of nominees for the MTV’s 2008 VMA’s including Katy Perry, Chris Brown, Rihanna (love that song “Take a bow”), Britney Spears, T.I., and more…
