New People and the LA chapter of the Social Media Club

So, you guys may have heard, but we’ve hired Sean Percival as our new Content Manager at docstoc. He’s cool, hip, and knows a LOT about social media. Word.

We’re growing and moving offices soon which should prove to be exciting and stressful considering I hate lifting heavy items. Seriously.

I attended the Kick-off meeting of the LA Chapter of the Social Media Club last night at the Rubicom Project and though arriving too late for the pizza, managed to hear the goals of the club including panels, possible ways to increase clarity about the purpose of social media for those who aren’t so savvy, and to differentiate the LA chapter of the club because of the heavy Entertainment focus in this city.

One interesting case study was brought up about the Roxy Club blog, as they were in dire financial straits at this time last year, and then… they started a blog. Nope, not some fancy website, but a blog that was completely community-driven with tons of pictures, fan gripes, interactive comments from Roxy members, and now its up for a VH1 Rock Honors Award for Best Rock Venue. They have a good amount of sold-out shows, and they’re booked every night. How’s that for ZERO marketing efforts, except for having a kick-ass blog?

Sweet.

I Had Too Much Wine Last Night…

TGIF. I had too much wine at that Techcrunch/Popsugar event last night. Eek.  Was feeling very dehydrated this morning.

Anyway, last night’s event was great and myself, Jason, Alon, and Andrew were there spreading the word about docstoc.  Ilya, our other developer, couldn’t be there b/c he was sick but he was there in spirit. haha.  (I had a drink in your place, Il)

Things You Should Be Prepared For If You’re One of the Presenters at these Meet-Ups

1) If you’re a woman, don’t wear high heels. Or at least wear good-quality ones. I mean, since my days at NYU, I’ve always loved boots but I wanted to wear heels to this event.  So I was walking/running/standing for 5-6 hours in these high heels and my toes were very angry with me. Ow.

2) Be open to meeting people. I used to be crazy shy when I was younger, but in social settings you have to forget all that. At least try to.  Now, people tell me that I’m way too loud and talkative.

3) Yea, its Open Bar- Don’t forget to tip the Bartenders!!! Its called karma, folks

4) When you learn something cool, share the knowledge - I was extremely proud of non-techie self as I explained to someone the definition of a widget.  Holla. Meanwhile, if you asked me what a “widget” was last year, I would’ve told you that its some sort of points system for an Xbox game.

5) Make a Fool of Yourself- Um yeah. I started dancing in the sparse dance floor with a few other people. I couldn’t help it.  It was a hip-hop song.  haha…
