Just a Night Out…with Karaoke
Craig Robinson, The Office, and UCB
So, if you’ve read any of the posts on my blog, you’ve probably figured out that I LOVE comedy.
Forms of laughing, realistic humor, Office humor, and that kind of humor where you’re standing in line at a 7-11 and someone is paying for their coffee with nickels and pennies, and everyone in line wants to incite a beat-down of that person.
Anyway, I was watching this week’s “Office” finale and thought that it wrapped up the season in a cliff-hanger way, but also kept the humor and realism up to par.
As someone who is from Philly, Pennsylvania, I appreciated the following:
1) Jim eating local Herrs brand potato chips in the break room. (Yum. I used to eat these all the time as a kid, mostly Sour Cream n’ onion and Salt n’vinegar. I’m still waiting for a cameo from Utz and Wawa, a local food mart with the best coffee ever)
2) Jan taking La Mas class in Allentown. I used to go to the YMCA there!
3) Darryl (Craig Robinson) playing in the band. BTW, I had a role on last season’s episode of “The Office,” and between takes, Craig and I would recite lyrics to current hip hop songs. He also does a mean karaoke of anything by Prince, and he and I would karaoke to “Promiscuous girl,” from Nelly Furtado and Timbaland at Miyagi’s on Sunset. To this day, I tell people this story, and they kind of look at me like I have 4 heads.
4) Michael is so sweet, honest and pitiful all at the same time. I wanted to give him a piece of candy or something. Him and Amy Ryan’s character were perfect for each other. Both nerdy and vulnerable… so it broke my heart to see that Michael’s going to be raising Jan’s baby???
5) Dwight looking beyond sad after Andy proposes to Angela. It was one of the more realistic scenes from Mr. Schrute that I’ve seen in a while.
6) Pam is going to pursue her creative talents!!! Nice. But ah!!! Pam in NYC with tons of smart, funny, driven men? I don’t know if she’ll stay the same small-time girl.
Oh yeah, my friend, David performed improv at Upright Citizens Brigade today, and he was hilarious. I think long-form improv is great b/c its more organic and less “big.” One of the funniest skits in the show was of two surgeons operating on a patient, while one surgeon was more interested in singing songs from “West Side Story.”
If you’re ever in LA and want to see some quality comedy that’s not so expensive, go to UCB.
