Be Nice to Your Interns…
I used to intern for a scary woman in NYC who had me get 7 modifications to her Starbucks drink. It was something like, “A Venti skim, dry, triple shot, no foam, extra hot, shaken, latte.” Oh, and two straws. The usual coffee runs were to the Starbucks on Spring Street, which is usually super-crowded, and then I had to blurt out this order. (I think the barista wanted to strangle me)
INT.Starbucks on Spring Street- DAY
A very crowded Starbucks filled with Lower East Side hipsters and downtown yuppies. I enter (as my 18 year old self with a long list of coffee orders)
15 Minutes pass… and I get to the front of the line
BARISTA: Hi, what can I get for you?
ME: Um. Can I get a Venti skim, dry, triple shot, no foam, extra hot, shaken, latte? Also, a… four shot Americano and add 4.5 pumps of sugar-free hazelnut.
The Barista looks at me as though I have 4 heads and then starts punching orders into the machine.
BARISTA: Hold on.
ME: I have about 6 more orders, and can I just say something?
The Barista rolls her eyes.
ME: I’m the intern.
The Barista softens a bit.
BARISTA: Well, we have free samples of the coffee frappuccino.
ME: Word.
And thus, I think you should be nice to the interns. Yeah, they need to do the work that no one else wants to do, but you know, be cool with them. Or they might write a blog post about you years later… haha. Anyway, here is a short interview I did with Belinda, an intern at Youthnoise.
